    Pillowcase Project

The American Red Cross visited our class this afternoon, and we learned about emergency preparedness, specifically related to home fires.  We worked through The Pillowcase Project lesson (which started with college students during Hurricane Katrina).  Students will bring home their pillowcases next week, but they do have a "My Preparedness Workbook" in their Friday folders.  If you have any questions about this, please let me know.

    Math Update
Our Math SOL is next Monday and Tuesday.  We will start first thing in the morning, so please help your child get a good night's sleep, eat a balanced breakfast, and wear comfy clothes to school.  Bringing a water bottle and a favorite book to school may also be helpful.

    Content Update-

Beginning Wednesday, we are resuming content. We decided since we are so close to being 5th graders, it would be a great opportunity to introduce them to switching classes. What that means is that students will visit each teacher for 1 hour of the day to work on a specific Science or Virginia Studies unit. They will end their day with the homeroom teacher.

      Math Update
Review, Review, Review! With the SOL's a week away, we will be working hard on each area we have studied this year. Students will be working independently to earn "Black Belts" in each strand while the teachers pull small groups for extra practice on more difficult topics. There will be an IXL skill review sheet for them to use at home if you want some extra practice.

      Content Update-

We will be taking a short break from content until after the SOL's are over. This gives us much needed time to pull small groups of students and solidify skills.

        Language Arts Update
We will be sending home some IXL practice that your child can practice before the test. This can be done in place of their 20 minutes of reading. Please know it is not a must do! We just thought if you wanted some extra materials, IXL would be a great way to practice what we do at school when you are at home!
        Math Update
Math properties are sometimes overlooked even though we use them all the time. It is important our students understand these properties to help build their number sense. Here is a great visual:

Poetry is an area that can often stump children. Students need to understand what a stanza is and the theme of a poem. Here is an example of one to try at home:

It is camp week! We are so excited for our upcoming trip. Just a few things to remember:

          • We will be leaving school on Thursday at around 9:15. Make sure your child has a packed lunch for that day.
          • Make sure your child has all their gear packed into an easy to carry system. He/she is responsible for carrying all their things. Check that packing list to ensure they have all they need.
          • There will be a bus that returns students not spending the night back to SRE around
6:15-6:30 (depends on traffic coming through Charlottesville).  Mrs. Sellers will be accompanying these students on the bus.
          • There will be a bus that brings students on Friday that did not stay the night at 9:15.
          • We will return to SRE on Friday just before dismissal time.

            Language Arts Update

Our focus will be to solidify all those reading strategies before the Reading SOL. Dictionary skills are another area we can sometimes take for granted. Guide words, know what words would be on the page, and understanding a dictionary entry is really important. If you can, pull out a dictionary and work with your child on these skills.

            Math Update
A short week of elapsed time. This is an important life skill all 4th graders should have. here is an example.

            • The game started at 7:50pm. It ended at 10:04pm. How long was the game?
            • Recess began at 11:12am. It ended at 11:44am. How long was recess?

            Morven Farms Recap
Well, the trip was quite a wet one but the students were still able to visit the rotations. They had an opportunity to make salad and salad dressing that they later sampled at lunchtime. Here is the recipe for the dressing:

            3 Tbsp. Olive Olive
            1 Tbsp. of Wine Vinegar
            1 tsp. honey
            1 tsp. of basil
            a pinch of salt
            a pinch a pepper
Whisk all ingredients together and you have a yummy dressing!

Our focus will be to solidify all those reading strategies before the Reading SOL. We will continue to really hone in on those tricky homophones. You can help at home by reviewing homophones in context. Take a look at this question that stumped many students:
