Field Day!!

Please make sure your child has extra clothes, sunscreen, and labeled water bottle for the day. We are still in desperate need of volunteers to join help on during the 11:15-2:00 time slot. If you are available, please contact the PE department. tlandseadel@k12albemarle.org

     We will be celebrating our last 3 1/2 days together by doing some fun event each day. We are also going to be mixing up classes so children have an opportunity to play with friends from each homeroom! 

Address Updating!
     As the summer draws near, it is important to make sure you have all your information recorded correctly in Powerschool. Summer mailings will be occurring and we do not want you to miss any information that is critical!! Please take a minute and check to Powerschool this week. If you need any assistance, let one of us or the office know and we will be glad to help.

     Please clean out those backpacks. We are sending home things no longer needed on a daily basis. Also, hang onto those Science and Social Studies folders until 6th grade. They are a wonderful resource when preparing for next year's SOLS.

Math SOL's!!

This Thursday and Friday we will be taking the 4th Grade Math SOL. We have been preparing for this all year, with one strong push the past few weeks. You can help at home by keeping your routine as normal and low key as possible this week. Getting to bed by 9, having healthy dinners and breakfasts make all the difference. Please send a healthy snack with your child every day, to keep their brains fortified. Children will be asked to sit and focus without noise for extended periods of time to keep the testing environment.  When all students are done for the day, teachers will be taking the classes outside to allow for the needed movement and socialization. 

Content Update: 

We will be finishing up the second rotation on Wednesday. We will then take a break until next Tuesday, and then resume with the last rotation.

The Reading SOL's went very well. Thank you for all your support at home. We will be working on finishing up county reading assessments for the remainder of the year. 

Math Update

Our focus will shift now to overall math review to prepare for next week's tests. You can help at home by working on elapsed time problems and measurement conversions, both customary and metric.

Camp Albemarle was a big success. A big thank you to all that made the trip possible. We could not have done it without such a supportive parent group.

• We will leave Stone-Robinson at about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, and return by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20.  
• On Thursday and Friday during school hours, students will be divided into groups to participate in several learning activities led by teachers and other expert naturalists.  
• On Thursday afternoon, we’ll have some reading and journaling time, and then allow the kids to have some free time choices of sports, arts and crafts, and games with parent volunteers while other adults prepare dinner.  
• We have arranged one bus to return from Camp Albemarle to Stone-Robinson on Thursday at 5:30pm.  This same bus will pick up students Friday morning and bring them back to camp.  If your child has a previous commitment and/or would prefer not to spend the night, let us know and we’ll plan to have your child return Thursday evening.  
• We do have instructional activities planned for both days, so we hope your child will be there on Thursday and Friday during regular school hours.
• A note was sent home with a list of items to pack for camp.  Please label each item with your child’s name as this will aid significantly in the clean-up and packing process.  
• A letter was sent home requesting phone numbers and medical information.  This information form must be given to the teacher in order for your child to be allowed to attend the trip.
• Pack a lunch and snack for your child on Thursday.
• Pack plenty of warm clothes.  Small plastic grocery bags are helpful for dirty and wet clothes. Please be sure that your child has at least 2 pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of dry socks for the trip. 
• Extra blankets and a comfort thing from home is a good idea too. We know that special blanket or stuffed animal can make all the difference in a good night's sleep!

Friday: 1/2 Day! Students are dismissed from Stone-Robinson at 11:30. There is NO afterschool offered. 

Families, we are constantly reflecting on day to day instruction and how to improve student learning. We are going to be doing a "re-boot" in our classrooms this week to remind ourselves of what learning should really look like and sound like. Please ask your child at home about some of the things we are doing.

We are taking a Released Reading SOL Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. We will use the information provided by this assessment to solidify any skills that our students need practice with during the 4th quarter.

Related Activities to Try at Home

The activities below are related to the mathematics in the unit Fraction Cards and Decimal Grids. You can use the activities to enrich your child’s mathematical learning experience. Fraction and Decimal Scavenger Hunt At school, students are working on understanding fractions and decimals. Be on the lookout for examples of fractions or decimal numbers in your world—in the kitchen, in a toolbox or a sewing kit, in grocery or hardware stores, or in magazines and newspapers. Take these opportunities to talk with your child about what the fraction or decimal means. Fair Shares You can build on the work of this unit at home by capitalizing on everyday situations that involve fractions. Issues of fairness often offer good examples of fractions. After making a batch of brownies and giving away part of the batch to the neighbors, you want to divide what’s left equally among 3 people. 

• What is  13 of 18 brownies? 
• What if you want to divide it equally among 6 people? 
• What is 16 of 18 brownies? 

Three people are sharing a pizza: 13 has mushrooms, 13 has pepperoni, and 13 has onions. 

• What might the pizza look like? 

Fractions in the Kitchen Cooking is another great way to learn about fractions. Ask your child questions such as, How can we measure 3/4 cup? Look together at how the fractions appear on a measuring cup. Doubling recipes or cutting them in half can help your child understand relationships such as 1/3 cup + 1/3 cups = 2/3 cup or 2 X 1/3 cup = 2/3 cup.
