Families, we are constantly reflecting on day to day instruction and how to improve student learning. We are going to be doing a "re-boot" in our classrooms this week to remind ourselves of what learning should really look like and sound like. Please ask your child at home about some of the things we are doing.

Reading Update

We are taking a Released Reading SOL Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. We will use the information provided by this assessment to solidify any skills that our students need practice with during the 4th quarter.

Related Activities to Try at Home

The activities below are related to the mathematics in the unit Fraction Cards and Decimal Grids. You can use the activities to enrich your child’s mathematical learning experience. Fraction and Decimal Scavenger Hunt At school, students are working on understanding fractions and decimals. Be on the lookout for examples of fractions or decimal numbers in your world—in the kitchen, in a toolbox or a sewing kit, in grocery or hardware stores, or in magazines and newspapers. Take these opportunities to talk with your child about what the fraction or decimal means. Fair Shares You can build on the work of this unit at home by capitalizing on everyday situations that involve fractions. Issues of fairness often offer good examples of fractions. After making a batch of brownies and giving away part of the batch to the neighbors, you want to divide what’s left equally among 3 people. 

• What is  13 of 18 brownies? 
• What if you want to divide it equally among 6 people? 
• What is 16 of 18 brownies? 

Three people are sharing a pizza: 13 has mushrooms, 13 has pepperoni, and 13 has onions. 

• What might the pizza look like? 

Fractions in the Kitchen Cooking is another great way to learn about fractions. Ask your child questions such as, How can we measure 3/4 cup? Look together at how the fractions appear on a measuring cup. Doubling recipes or cutting them in half can help your child understand relationships such as 1/3 cup + 1/3 cups = 2/3 cup or 2 X 1/3 cup = 2/3 cup.

Math Update

We spent last week working on fraction cards. These cards our visuals of what each fraction represents. This week, we will be working on comparing and ordering fractions. It would be great if you can talk about fractions in any activity you do at home. Baking a sweet treat with your child and changing the recipe is a great way to emphasize those much-needed skills!

Families, we're still in need of lots of volunteers for Camp Albemarle.  Without certain spots filled (dinner lead, breakfast lead, breakfast crew, lunch lead) we won't be able to do the overnight portion.  If possible, please sign up for something that works with your schedule.  There are also opportunities to sign up for chaperoning students during the day (their teachers will be there too, but this is helpful to keep everyone together, make bathroom runs, etc.), help with the campfire, lead afternoon choice activities so that students can choose what interests them, etc.  Many thanks!

Reading Update

We will continue our work on fact and opinion. We will also be doing a "Skill -A - Day" to help us review these reading skills in different context. 

Math Update

Our class is starting a new mathematics unit about fractions called Fraction Cards and Decimal Grids. During this unit, students represent halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, sixths, twelfths, fifths, and tenths; find equivalent fractions; and compare fractions. Students are introduced to decimal notation, represent decimals, and compare decimals. They begin computation with fractions: adding and subtracting fractions and multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Throughout the unit, students work toward these goals:

In our math class, students spend time discussing problems in depth and are asked to share their reasoning and solutions. It is important that your child solve math problems in ways that make sense to him or her. At home, encourage your child to explain the math thinking that supports those solutions. Please look for more information and activities about Fraction Cards and Decimal Grids that will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Reading Update

We will continue our work on inferencing and also will be introducing fact and opinion. While this seems like an easy skill, many of the questions are tricky and ask for facts within the text. 

Math Update

We have wrapped up our work with place value. We will be giving a released SOL for two reasons. First, will use the JUST THE PLACE VALUE portion of the assessment to provide us a test score for the Place Value unit. Second, we will look at the assessment as a whole, to provide us information on our student's strengths and weaknesses. This will drive instruction for the remainder of the year. You can help your child at home by practicing computation and measurement conversions.

Yes, you are correct, it is a week full of tests!! These assessments are used data collection, not student grades. They help us to determine what skills students have mastered and areas we need to focus on over the next few months. You can help at home by making sure your child gets a good night sleep, has a healthy breakfast, and packing a healthy snack every day!!

With the winter months upon us, it is important to keep our students safe. We will do our best to get students outside every day, as long as the temperatures are high enough. We will offer an inside option on days when the wind chill is 32 or below. Students are able to go outside if their skin is covered.
