Reading Update

  This week we will be taking our Reading Midyear Assessment. This is a test provided to us by the county to see how well children are doing with the curriculum thus far. This is NOT a graded assessment. Instead, it is used for us to determine individual strengths and weaknesses in children and it guides our instruction for the second part of the year. 

Math Update

We are working on linear measurement until Winter Break. We will be using both the US Customary and Metric systems. This is a great unit to practice at home! Your child can measure the length and width of any household object, they can estimate how large something is, and they can also tell you the best unit to use when measuring something. 

Content Update-

Now that students have rotated through every teacher for a unit, we will be giving a cumulative test. You can review VA. Geography, Plants, Force, Motion, and Energy at home.  Look for study materials coming home on Monday.

Word Study Update

Over the next two weeks, the students will be working on vocabulary centering on Geometry. Our next math unit covers Geometry and we have found that teaching the words in Language Arts, makes a big difference in their overall understanding. The test will be about the meaning of the words as opposed to the spelling of the words.

We have our test Wednesday. You can help at home by practicing multiplication and division word problems. Here are some examples:

• A hotel has 7 floors. The lobby, restaurant, and gym are located on the ground floor. The guestrooms are on 1st to 6th floors. 1. If there are 35 standard rooms on each floor, how many standard rooms are there? 2. There are 4 housekeepers working on each floor. One room only requires one housekeeper. If the housekeepers try distributing the work equally, how many housekeepers need to clean more rooms than the others?

Jamestown Reminders for Thursday, November 8,

 2018

• Childrenwill need to arrive at school at regular time and be picked up by 8:00p.m. in the bus parking lot.
• Please park to the side of the bus lot to accommodate the buses pulling in and make sure to check out with your child's teacher when you pick up him/her.
• They need to be dressed in appropriate clothing. As of Monday, the forecast looks sunny and a high of 60 degrees.
• good walking shoes
• raincoat/poncho
• if rain is in the forecast (Please check the weather again on Wednesday.)
• layers for cooler weather and/or the bus ride
• They need to bring 2 snacks, 1 lunch, and 3 sealed drinks in non-breakable containers.  
• Children who choose to bring appropriate electronics will be responsible for any items they bring.  Headphones are encouraged. All electronics will stay on the busses during the tours. Chaperones may take pictures.
• If your child has medication, please make sure the nurse has it so that we are prepared for the trip. Please make sure any required forms are filled out.
• If you are chaperoning our trip, please park to the side of the bus lot to not block in the buses when we’re ready to depart.  Please plan on following the buses on Interstate 64 to help at rest stop(s) along the way for bathroom breaks. You may also carpool with other chaperones. 
• Chaperones, please make sure you have completed the Volunteer Registration/background check process with the office.
• Reminder- chaperone responsibilities are:
• Drive to and from Jamestown and follow the school bus to help us at rest stops(s) along Interstate 64 if/when we need to stop for bathroom breaks.  If your child rides home with you, please still follow the bus as we’ll need help at the rest stop(s) on the way home with our students.  
• Manage a small group of students throughout the day on tours, trips to the bathroom, etc. Contact teacher in case of emergency

Related Activities to Try at Home

The activities described here are related to the mathematics in Unit 3. Use the activities to enrich your child’s learning experience. Modeling Division Situations At school, students are solving word problems that represent various types of division situations. Encourage your child to help you solve situations that come up in your daily activities. Here are some examples: “I baked a batch of 48 cookies for the bake sale. I need to put them into bags of 5. How many bags of 5 can I make? What can I do with the extra cookies?” “There are 180 players who will play baseball in teams of 9. How many teams can they make?”

How Did You Solve That? Ask your child to tell you about

how he or she is multiplying and dividing. Show that you

are interested in these approaches. Because these strategies

may be unfamiliar to you, listen carefully to your child’s

explanation; you might even try to do a problem or two

using the new procedure. Let your child be the teacher!

Due to the nature of this trip, chaperones are needed, but the amount is limited. Classrooms will hold a lottery for parent chaperones. We have learned the area model for multiplying numbers. This is an excellent strategy for solving more complex multiplication problems. We are not yet ready to share the algorithm for multiplication yet, so please refrain from doing this at home. It is extremely important that they conceptually understand multiplication and area model is a great way to do this.

Math Update

Classes are starting a new unit about multiplication and division called Multiple Towers and Cluster Problems. During this unit, students will build on the work they did in Unit 1. Students will be solving multiplication problems with 2-digit numbers, division word problems, and problems about multiples and number relationships. Throughout the unit, students work toward these goals: 

Students will work on multiplication and division again later this year in unit 7, when they will solve problems with larger numbers and share a variety of solution strategies. In our math class, students spend time discussing problems in depth and are asked to share their reasoning and solutions. It is most important that children accurately and efficiently solve math problems in ways that make sense to them. At home, encourage your child to explain his or her math thinking to you. Please look for more information and activities about Unit 3 that will be sent home in the coming weeks.
